Extension and renewal of your pilot's licence

To extend each individual type rating, each pilot must demonstrate two hours of flight time in 12 months, including a proficiency check with a recognised examiner (whereby the check flight can also count towards the two hours).

Pursuant to Part-FCL.740/Part-FCL.740.H, type ratings are valid for one year and can be extended if the necessary conditions are met. Important: the check flight can be completed up to three months before your licence expiry date!

If you have multiple helicopter type ratings in one category (i.e. multiple type ratings for single-engine piston helicopters or single-engine turbine helicopters), then you can extend them together. For more information, see Part-FCL.740(a) and Part-FCL.740.H(a)/(b)

The most dangerous situations aboard an aircraft include the breakout of flames and smoke.

For this reason, EASA requires every crew member to complete fire training (AIR OPS). In cooperation with an experienced training company, crew members are taught the theoretical basics about what fires need to break out, and how to assess and control different types of fire. This is followed up with practical training. In order for the Actual Fire Fighting training to remain valid, participants must take a refresher course every 36 months.

Coping with medical emergencies

In order to have the necessary knowledge and skills in the event of a medical emergency on board, it is mandatory for all pilots and crew members to complete a first aid course pursuant to AIR OPS.

Experienced trainers use case studies from the field of aviation to teach the theoretical basics. This is then followed up with practical training with the help of special dummies. Participants must take a refresher course every 36 months.

Dangerous Goods Regulations Training

With regard to the carriage of dangerous goods by air, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) lays down rules in its Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, which have been implemented by the IATA (International Air Transport Association) in the Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Here, goods are classified according to their hazardous potential, whereby quantitative restrictions and transport regulations are specified. These regulations are regularly updated and adjusted to meet changing conditions. For example, in recent years, regulations for the transportation of lithium batteries have been implemented after their improper transport led to serious accidents.

And of course, air travellers have also come across stricter hand luggage conditions in recent years. For pilots and crew members, having knowledge of the DGR is of particular importance, since ultimately they are responsible for ensuring compliance. In order to fulfil this responsibility, pursuant to AIR OPS recurrent training in handling dangerous goods every 24 months is mandatory.
